above and next Dolores von Furstenberg Guinness basks in the late-day sun outside the Hotel Cala di Volpe on the Costa Smeralda, Sardinia, 1965. The photo above has become one of Slim’s most acclaimed images over the years. The outtakes from the original photo shoot show Slim’s various attempts at capturing the essence of Guinness, a fashion and style icon like her mother, Gloria Guinness. Dolores was recently widowed when she fell in love with one of the world’s most eligible bachelors, Prince Karim Aga Khan. Aga Khan developed the Costa Smeralda in 1962—a thirty-five-mile stretch of untouched coastline, unchanged for centuries, on the island of Sardinia. The Ismaili prince, whose father was Prince Aly Khan, part of a long Persian dynasty and later a husband of Rita Hayworth, was considered to be a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, but to his circle of wealthy friends, he was simply “Karim.” He built the rustic Hotel Cala di Volpe and a handful of villas but otherwise did little to disturb the area’s sun-soaked beaches, dusty lanes, and interior farmland. The area’s nearly mythological fame in the 1950s was owed to its unparalleled blend of rusticity and sophistication.
